Why is the Peak District the perfect Christmas location?

Updated: Dec 14, 2022

From viewing points to reservoirs, the Peak District is the perfect Christmas location for everything that you dream of. So here are the top 5 things to do this Christmas:

1) Visit Chatsworth House which is one of the most touristic and historic dating back to 1549 when it was bought for £600! By Sir William Cavendish and Bess of Hardwick. Throughout the years this has been passed down to other Dukes of Devonshire. The house is well known for its quality of art, landscape, and hospitality. You can also walk through the vast gardens that they have there. Did you know several films, television shows and documentaries were filmed here such as Pride and Prejudice, The Duchess, The Wolfman, and lastly big scenes from the big series Peaky Blinders in the BBC. This is just some examples there are many more films made here.

2) Explore Hathersage which is approximately 10 miles south-west of Sheffield. It’s well known for the burying of Robin Hood’s giant righthand man, little John which is outside Saint Michaels church. It is also located under Milestone edge where you can go for walks and do little climbs at any level ranging from beginner to expert, after the climb you can walk along the top where you can take in the breath-taking views of Hathersage. It is also the perfect place for shopping, you can get your high-quality outdoor gear and try out unique dishes homemade from local farm produced products. If you are brave enough go for a swim in the outdoor heated swimming pool at the Hathersage Swimming Pool.

3) Wonder around the historic village of Eyam which became famous after the Black Death of 1665 and 1666. Did you know that some of the village populations were genetically unique and immune to this disease. You can find out what happened here in the mini museum called Eyam Museum. This small historical village is located in-between Hathersage and Chatsworth House.

4)Walk around Ladybower Reservoir which is well known for the location of where the Dam busters trained for the raid on the Dams of Ruhr Valley, there is a museum in one of the watch towers on the Dam. The reservoir itself has now had a drought due to the extremely high temperatures this summer, you can now see the secret village of the reservoir called Derwent village it is really a site to see.

5) Well known for the Bakewell pudding, the Town Bakewell is the perfect place for a Christmas shop in their weekly markets which started all the way back in the 13th century where they started with very few shops and gradually started to welcome more people to sell their goods. As you walk into Bakewell Town go across the Love Lock Bridge where you will see padlocks of loved ones leaving a memory behind in the Town.
