Third conspirator’ named Abu Mohammad Mas’ud Kheir al-Marimi is said to have been the man behind making the bomb that blew up the aircraft that smashed into Lockerbie 34 years ago.
The Lockerbie disaster is still the deadliest attack to ever happen on British soil.
The US justice department has confirmed that Mas’ud has been taken into custody and will appear before the federal court in Washington DC.
All 259 people onboard the flight including 16 crew members were killed when the airliner exploded at 38,000ft. 11 locals in Lockerbie, Dumfries also had their lives taken as the aircraft plummeted to the ground.
Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al Megrahi, was jailed for life in 2001 was diagnosed with cancer in 2009 and later died in 2012 after been given compassionate release.
“Scottish Prosecutors and police, working with the UK government and US colleagues, will continue to pursue this investigation, with the sole aim of bringing those who acted along with al Megrahi to justice,” said the Scottish authorities.
Mas’ud in 2020 was in a Libyan custody when he was charged with being the third man involved in the terrorist attack.
William Barr who was the attorney that charged the man, said “US authorities would work arm in arm with their Scottish counterparts when pursuing justice in this case”
