The Time Magazine are well known for choosing a celebrity or a person who has done something that has changed the world or their country massively. This started from 1927 when Charles Lindbergh was chosen as ‘the person of the year’ for being the first person to fly across the Atlantic Ocean solo on the dates 20-21 May 1927. Let’s look at the last 10 from 2012-2022 ‘person(s) of the year’.
2012: Barack Obama:
Barack Obama was chosen as the 2012 ‘Person of the year’ this wasn’t the first time it happened too him, the first time it happened was when he was the first African American President in 2008 after defeating John McCain. He was then re-elected in 2012 defeating Mitt Romney.
2013: Pope Francis:
In 2013 Pope Francis was chosen as the ‘person of the year’ after replacing Pope Benedict XVI making him the Pope of Roman Catholic Church. The main reason why he was chosen as the ‘person of the year’ was because of the speed he pulled the ‘Papacy out of the Palace and into the streets.'
2014: Ebola Fighters:
In 2014 the Ebola Fighters were chosen as the ‘persons of the year’ after stopping the spread of the Ebola virus epidemic in West Africa. The Ebola Fighters refers to the health care workers, ambulance attendants, nurses, doctors, burial parties and others that helped stop the spread of this deadly virus.
2015: Angela Merkel:
In 2015 Angela Merkel was chosen as ‘person of the year’ for her great leadership in the Greek Debt crisis which was when the Greek economy suffered the longest recession of any advanced mixed economy to date. She also helped with the European Migrant crisis which was the period of significantly increased movement of refugees and migrants into Europe in 2015, when 1.3 million people came to the continent to request asylum, making it the most in a single year since World War II.
2016: Donald Trump:
In 2016 Donald Trump was chosen as the ‘person of the year’ after being elected as the president of the United States of America following an upset victory over the former secretary Hillary Clinton making him the 45th President.
2017: The Silence Breakers:
In 2017 The Silence Breakers (also known as the #metoo movement) were chosen as the ‘persons of the year’ this was because they were the people who spoke out against sexual abuse, harassment and rape culture in which people publicize their experiences of sexual abuse or sexual harassment, they used the #metoo since 2006 to help spread the word and share their experiences.
2018: Jamal Khashoggi and other journalists:
In 2018 Jamal Khashoggi and other journalists were chosen as the ‘persons of the year’ because of their murders, persecutions, arrests because of their reporting. Khashoggi was murder because of his criticism of the Saudi crown Prince. Maria Ressa editor of Philippine news website ‘Rappler’ who was indicted for her critical coverage of Rodrigo Duterte’s controversially violent policies. Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, Reuters journalists captured in Myanmar while investigating the Inn Din Massacre. The staff of ‘The Capital’, a Maryland newspaper whose office was targeted by a gunman who killed five of its employees in a mass shooting.
2019: Greta Thunberg:
In 2019 Climate Change activist and the founder of the school strike campaign, Greta Thunberg was chosen as the ‘person of the year’ this was because of her commitment to tell others of what it’s like to be young and living in global warming from hers and other young people’s perspective. She challenged political people such as Donald Trump and during the pandemic Boris Johnson.
2020: Joe Biden and Kamala Harris:
In 2020 Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were chosen as the ‘persons of the year’ after being elected as the new President of the United States and Vice president of the United States, after defeating the ex-president Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence. In January Kamala Harris made history, she was the first African and Asian American Vice president. They are still the President and Vice President of the United States to this day.
2021: Elon Musk:
In 2021 Elon Musk the CEO of Tesla, Inc., founder, and CEO of Space-X was chosen as the ‘person of the year’. He was also recognised as the Richest man in 2021 and still is to this date.
2022 (present): Volodymyr Zelensky and the Spirit of Ukraine:
Finally, this year 2022, Volodymyr Zelensky and the State of Ukraine is chosen as ‘the persons of the year’ or should I say ‘The Country of the year’ following their fight against the Russian President Vladimir Putin after they invaded Ukraine. The country and Zelensky was also recognised as a true resilient person and nation who is currently trying to lead Ukraine to victory.
