Should England stick with Gareth Southgate?

After England’s agonising defeat to France in the World Cup quarter finals, the England fans all have formed an opinion on if Gareth Southgate should stay on for Euro 2024 or if it is time for a change in direction for this young talented team. Southgate has led the nation to the semi-finals of World Cup 2018, the final of Euro 2020 and now to the quarter final of World Cup 2022 in Qatar. With rumours circulating that both Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino would be interested in speaking to the FA if the job becomes available.

Southgate’s current contract runs till the end of Euro 2024 and most of the nation including me would be happy to see him see his current deal out and lead us to Germany in 2 years’ time. In his post-match interview following the defeat to France, Southgate didn’t guarantee he was staying on and said he needed time to reflect and make a decision. He said post-match: "When I've been through the past few tournaments my emotions have been difficult to really think through properly in those following few weeks, It took so much energy out of you, and you have so much going through your mind "I want to make the right decision either way because it has to be the right one to go again, or the right one not to go again and I don't think tonight is the time to make a decision like that” This means he could be debating walking away and may feel he has taken the team as far as he can.

In my opinion, as much as Southgate has done well in the job and has given us some amazing memories, it is hard to not think what an elite coach like Tuchel or Pochettino could do with this squad. We have so much attacking and creative talent who will be nearer their prime and more experienced. Players such as Reece James, Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, Marcus Rashford, Mason Mount, Declan Rice, Fikayo Tomori and Bukayo Saka will surely be more crucial to the side in 2 years’ time with the likes of Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson phased out to allow the new young talent to come through and lead the nation into future tournaments and hopefully bring football home!

If Southgate does decide to resign, the FA should look at bringing a manager in with a more attacking style of play to compliment all the young talent in them areas that we have coming through. If Southgate does decide to stay, id expect the players who have served him well over the last 3 tournaments may be used ahead of the younger players as Southgate prefers the players he knows can do it for him and have done it before. Do you think Southgate should see out his current contract or is it time for a new Manager with fresh ideas to lead our Nation?
